What You Need To Know About Lip Fillers

When lip liner just won’t do the trick anymore, you may start researching your options for lip injections and what to expect — and that research might lead you to our med spa here in Raleigh, NC. Whether you were born with thin lips or your lips are thinning due to the natural aging process, there are many ways to enhance them.

Which filler is best for me?

Hyaluronic acid-based (HA) dermal fillers, such as the JUVÉDERM® family of products, are among our Raleigh, NC patients’ most popular noninvasive facial procedures. Injectable fillers are designed to replace age-related volume loss, provide structure and support to underlying tissues, or add volume that enhances or balances facial features.

BOTOX® Cosmetic, on the other hand, is meant to smooth out the “dynamic wrinkles” that form in the most expressive areas of our face, such as crow’s feet, lines between the eyebrows, and forehead wrinkles. (Here’s more on what matters most with BOTOX treatments.)

Formulations vary, and each brand has its own advantages. Skin Raleigh offers most FDA-approved fillers available today, so that everyone can find a suitable option to meet their unique needs and budget.

Restylane®, JUVÉDERM ULTRA XC, and JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC are some of the most popular ways to shape and smooth out the lip area. The longevity of your results depends on the type of filler used, and it can vary from person to person. Some fillers last from three to six months; others last almost a year.

One advantage of using HA-based fillers over the older collagen fillers: If a patient is unhappy with the results, we can dissolve the filler with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This gives patients peace of mind, especially when trying a facial filler for the first time.

How should I prep for my appointment?

Ten days prior to your lip filler appointment with us, we recommend avoiding painkillers (except TYLENOL®), fish oil, and Vitamin E, because they tend to thin the blood. Thinner blood will make the area more prone to bruising and bleeding.

During your initial consultation, we will also discuss your history (if any) with cold sores, which can be triggered by an injection. If needed, we can prescribe you something to prevent it.

Another recommendation that may be made during your consultation is purchasing arnica (available at Skin Raleigh). Arnica is an herbal dietary supplement that has been used for centuries to reduce bleeding and inflammation. It costs between $9 and $20.

Is there recovery time?

As with all procedures, even noninvasive, you should know the trade-offs to having your lips injected. “There are risks with any procedure, but the risks are minimal,” explains Dr. Benjamin Wood. “Some may experience bruising, swelling, and redness — they are the most common side effects after the injection.”

We also advise patients not to exercise the day of their lip treatment so help avoid bruising. You should also avoid otherwise innocuous activities that increase blood flow to your face, like getting a massage or a facial.
